Pruning is where most of the long term damage gets done. A topped tree shoots epicormic regrowth from poorly placed wounds and rots from the cut down inside five years. A lion tailed gum becomes a wind sail with all the weight on the tips and snaps the first gully wind that comes through. My crew prunes to the published Australian standard, full stop. Every cut has a reason and a target node.

On a mature red gum in Adelaide the work is usually deadwood out of the upper canopy, plus a clearance lift away from a roof line or pool cabana. On a Mediterranean ornamental — olive, oak, pepper, jacaranda — the call is more often a reduction across the canopy to bring weight off long laterals, or thinning to let light through to the lawn underneath. Heritage protected canopy trees and Significant listed trees still respond to good arboriculture; the rule is that no more than around a quarter of the live canopy comes out in a single visit, otherwise the tree pushes water shoots and the structure ends up worse.

Every quote shows the cut type, the percent canopy removed, and a description of the silhouette afterwards. No surprises and no lopping vocabulary.

Across Adelaide we see this work most often near Adelaide Botanic Garden and out across the surrounding suburbs — heritage Moreton Bay fig avenue and significant gum collection in the city. Species we handle regularly include River Red Gum (eucalyptus camaldulensis) and Sugar Gum (eucalyptus cladocalyx), each with its own pruning windows, failure modes, and council protections. Every quote we write factors in the species on site and the access route, not just the visible canopy.

What's included

  • Crown reduction with target node cuts at lateral branches
  • Crown lift to clear driveways, pool decks and roof lines
  • Deadwooding through the upper canopy on stressed red gums
  • Selective thinning to break wind load on long laterals
  • Pruning of co dominant stems and crossing limbs
  • Hedge shaping on olive screens and pittosporum runs
  • All prunings chipped on site and the drop zone left clean

When you might need this

  • Deadwood is showing on a heritage red gum and limbs have started dropping
  • The canopy is over the gutter line and the leaf load is pulling them down
  • A long lateral on an old peppertree looks heavy and ready to drop
  • A pool surround needs the canopy lifted for sun back over the water
  • An olive hedge along the back fence has gone over and needs reshaping
  • Formative cuts are due on a five year old plant out before the structure sets

Tree Pruning FAQs

What is the difference between pruning and lopping?

Pruning is a planned cut at a target node — usually a lateral branch — that lets the tree shed water and seal the wound. Lopping is a midshaft cut that leaves a stub which decays inward. Lopping shortens the life of any tree and the crew does not do it on Adelaide jobs.

How much of the canopy can come off in one visit?

Roughly a quarter of the live canopy is the upper limit before the tree starts pushing water shoots and the structure deteriorates. Bigger reductions get staged across two or three winters so each pass heals before the next one starts.

When is the right time of year to prune?

Most structural work on Adelaide trees can run year round. The exceptions are flowering ornamentals — jacaranda, magnolia, fruit trees — which prune cleaner straight after the petals drop. Hot weather pruning on stressed gums is timed for the cooler end of the day so the cuts do not bleed sap into the bark.
